Seals are known in Orkney as selkies. The islands of Orkney is recognised as an internationally important breeding site for the two main species of seals in the UK – the grey & the common ( also known as harbour) seal. Selkies can present as both friendly and inquisitive and you may find that you are being watched or followed when you are near the shore or on a cliff top walk! You are also likely to see them basking on skerries at low tide. You will see them all year round but the Autumn is when they “pup” and there are webcams at certain sites relaying live footage of these charming mammals.
