We are a new self catering facility in Orkney and we aim to offer you a high standard of accommodation set in a beautiful location. We care deeply about our local environment and hope you will too.
Please take time to read through the information contained in this folder. It will help you to become familiar with the lodge, facilities and other information such as emergency contacts.
The lodge accommodates 4 people comfortably but can sleep six if the sofa bed is used.
The weekly cost includes heating ( see heating) , electricity and linen/towels.
A welcome pack with basic groceries is provided on arrival to help you settle in.
Linen/towels is provided on arrival and changed weekly. If you are staying for two weeks, please ensure access for such on Saturday morning.
There is free Brown Trout fishing on the loch.
We apologise that we cannot accept pets in the lodge. This is because we strive to keep the accommodation as clean and comfortable as possible and are aware that many people also have allergies to pet hair.
Arrival can be arranged to coincide with late night ferry times but generally will be from 2pm. We request that departure is 10.30am promptly to allow adequate time to prepare the lodge for the next guests. Again this can be negotiated if leaving on a late ferry.
Access to the lodge is provided by a shared drive to the main house. Parking for two vehicles is provided at the lodge. Please do not park on the shared drive as this is also used by farm vehicles who may require access at any time. An automatic outside security light will come on but can be controlled from the lodge if required.
A keysafe box is provided and the security number changed frequently. You are issued with a number prior to arrival. We suggest leaving the key here when you go out to avoid it becoming lost. PLEASE NOTE that the owners can take no responsibility for the loss or theft of any personal belongings. We therefore recommend that any items of value are left at home.
A shed is provided which houses the recycling bins and patio furniture and has storage space for bicycles, fishing rods, outdoor clothing/boots. A separate key is provided and is also kept in the keysafe. Please feel free to use the patio furniture, there is a cover which we ask is used, if you wish to keep it out for the duration of your stay.
IN ORDER TO KEEP THE LODGE CLEAN WE REQUEST THAT ANY WET/MUDDY/SANDY OUTDOOR CLOTHING/BOOTS ARE REMOVED PRIOR TO COMING INDOORS.
A charcoal BBQ is situated to the front of the lodge. The BBQ utensils are stored in a box in the shed. We ask that you provide your own charcoal and clean the grill/utensils after use. There is also a firepit in this area, so you can enjoy sitting round a campfire looking over the loch. Wood can be purchased from the owners or you may purchase/gather your own .
PLEASE RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT AND REMOVE ANY LITTER/WASTE
We adhere to the recycling policy of Orkney Islands Council. Please use the containers in the shed for your recycling of 4 main items - plastic bottles, paper, cans, bottles/jars. All other waste is treated as general and should be put into bin bags then into the wheelie bin provided.
The central HEATING SYSTEM/HOT WATER and COOKER is provided by gas bottles. The heating system will be set to a specified temp and on a timer. We hope this will suffice, however you may of course change the temperature/timings if required and/or use the electric lounge fire. Gas is expensive and to keep costs down we ask that you turn down the heating to a low setting or turn it off when you are out and when you leave for home. Please be mindful of leaving doors/windows open if the heating is on. We are happy to discuss any additional heating needs with you e.g for ill health/disability. There may be an additional cost if additional heating is required.
GAS BOTTLES ARE CHANGED WEEKLY OR AS REQUIRED AND MAINTAINED BY THE OWNER.
Note - If both bottles are used during your stay, an additional charge is required for further gas.
The KITCHEN is equipped with a gas hob, gas oven, electric microwave for cooking. There is a fridge /freezer and a washer/dryer in situ also. There is a range of utensils, dishes, glassware, pans and crockery. We hope you will find this adequate and will be grateful if you can report any breakages so we can replace for the next guests.
Cloths, tea towels, washing up liquid, pan scrubbers are provided.
The LOUNGE area has comfortable seating, a wall mounted TV with Digibox, DVD and iPod docking station. There is also an electric fire to create additional ambience. You will find a range of books, DVDS and games to use for days when the weather may be less favourable.
The PATIO is accessed from the lounge double doors. The furniture is located in the shed. Please be mindful if it has been raining as the decking can become slippy when wet.
The TWIN bedroom has built in storage space and a wall mounted TV. The two beds can be pushed together to create a double sleeping space. If it is only required for one person we can remove the second bed to give more space.
The MASTER BEDROOM has a double bed, wall mounted TV, ample storage space and an en suite shower room. The central heating boiler is situated in a separate cupboard in this room. A hairdryer is provided.
The BATHROOM has a WC, washbasin and bath with a shower. There is a vanity cupboard to store toiletries.
SANITATION - PLEASE NOTE the lodge IS NOT CONNECTED TO MAINS DRAINAGE but has a SEPTIC TANK. Please do not attempt to flush away cotton buds, nappies, excessive toilet paper, sanitary products etc as the system is unable to deal with this. Please use the bins provided. Please use the eco friendly cleaning products supplied as they are used to help maintain a chemical balance in the system.
OUTSIDE AREA We are happy for guests and their children to enjoy being outdoors. We do ask that you respect our wildlife and in the Summer, there is likely to be ground nesting birds in the surrounding grass/fields. They are well camouflaged so be wary ! The road is very quiet and ideal for a stroll or cycle ride. The loch can be accessed by anyone and a track leads from the road through a gate marked Orkney Brown Trout Assoc.
Free range eggs may be obtained from the owners if available. Some will be provided in the welcome pack.
WI FI is provided free of charge
MOBILE PHONES - please note that certain networks do not work well in Orkney. If you have to make an urgent call home and have no signal, please do not hesitate to come to the house. Cycles are included in the cost for your use if you request them, please note these are used at your own risk

SHOPPING - There is a small local general shop and post office ( Mistra) in Evie village approx 3 miles away. The village of Dounby approx 8 miles away, has a larger and licensed Co-operative which also has fuel pumps. There is also a butcher, pharmacy, Post Office and craft shop here. The Smithfield hotel also has a cafe. For larger supermarkets, Tesco and Lidl can be found in Kirkwall as well as various bakeries, deli's and other general shops. Stromness also has a large Co-operative, local bakery and butcher.
EVIE BEACH AND THE BROCH OF GURNESS - Sandy beach suitable for swimming for those brave enough ! The broch is an archaeological site managed by Historic Scotland and is a bit further along from the beach. Both look over to the islands of Eynhallow and Rousay.
BURGAR HILL HIDE - The large wind turbines on Burgar Hill seem an unlikely place for a bird hide ! However there is one here and each year Red Throated Divers choose to use the lochan as a breeding ground. The hide is accessed by a road to Castlelaw and is signposted as such and as bird hide. A trip up here is a good opportunity to get up close to the turbines and see just how big they are. The views are good too on a clear day/evening.
BIRDS ! - We are fortunate to have a variety of birds around the area. On site you will have regular sightings of Hen Harrier and Short Eared Owl. You will also see and hear Skylark, Twite, Wheatear, Oystercatchers, Snipe, Lapwing, Pheasants , Greylag Geese, Curlew, Redshank and maybe even Red Grouse over on the hill. There are some binoculars and books in the lodge to help you observe and identify them.
FURTHER AFIELD - There are so many things to see and do in Orkney, far too many to list here so we have provided a small selection of leaflets & brochures for you. Additionally you may wish to look online or visit the Tourist Information Centre in Kirkwall. We have provided some maps for your use, we ask that you remember to leave them behind when you leave for the next guests.
